I enjoyed the audio/visual on this - felt like you were getting into your stride with them as you progressed.

Does the analysis of the Harlot's Progress arise from contemporary commentary? And is there any significance to the coat of arms on the wall in this one?

No, this is my analysis, based upon what I know of the characters in the plates (some were real people, some not), and London at the time. People tended not to analysis art quite so much in the 18thC - it's a much more modern concept. They tended to see it in a much more organic way.

The coat of arms is a brilliant spot. I could have talked about it for AGES. There are a few theories, the best one being that it is a bastardized version of one of Moll's keepers family arms. I say bastardized because the symbols are actually gin spigots, despite the fact that it looks like a conventional coat of arms. The fact that Moll's son is dressed so finely points to the fact that he has a rich father. Again, I couldn't fit it into the audio, so thanks for asking.

superb! i thoroughly enjoyed your review of the 'harlot's progress.' i also find hogarth fascinating for not only his wonderfully detailed and artistically rendered plates, but his use of them as a social commentary on his time. (what would he say about ours?)

may i suggest a tour of 'marriage a la mode' if possible?
